In 2017, I wouldn't have dreamed that Chainlink would be where it is today thanks to Sergey and Steve's foresight and leadership. I look forward to being amazed eight years from now.
On this date 8 years ago, the Chainlink whitepaper was released to the world. Since 2017, Chainlink has evolved from just an idea to becoming the industry-standard oracle platform enabling tens of trillions in transaction value and securing nearly $100B for the vast majority of DeFi markets. Up next? Bringing the whole world onchain.

DECO was the first zkTLS protocol. These things take time, so I'm delighted that Chainlink has just announced its inclusion in the Chainlink Platform Privacy Suite. Kudos to the DECO team: @0xFanZhang @mskd96 Jasleen Malvai and @sgoldfed. @chainlink

These new features complement the Chainlink Platform’s existing privacy-preserving capabilities, including DECO—a novel ZK-oracle technology for authenticating web data in a privacy-preserving manner. DECO uses zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) and existing web infrastructure to enable financial institutions, enterprises, and Web3 developers to verify sensitive information without exposing the underlying data. In the very near future, we plan to make the DECO Sandbox publicly accessible, offering pre-configured use cases that showcase DECO's privacy-preserving capabilities including verifications around identity, proof of funds, and sanctions screenings, while maintaining the privacy of sensitive data. Our new paper on DAOs has two main findings: (1) Common ways to measure decentralization today leave DAOs flying blind. A new metric, Voting-Block Entropy (VBE), surfaces key lessons about how to decentralize DAOs. (2) Dark DAOs are practical and a realistic threat. They enable confidential vote-buying in DAOs, i.e., bribery. A "lite" version is as easy to use as liquid staking. Privacy-preserving oracles can tap a vast new source of data for AI. That's the idea behind Props—protected pipelines. Discussion with @lmoroney, who's unsurpassed in getting to the heart of a technical topic. Listen especially for his platypus anecdote.
A lack of data is holding back AI—what’s available on the public Internet is just a small fraction of the world's information. This creates a massive opportunity. If privacy can be protected, medical and other highly sensitive yet extremely valuable data could safely train LLMs, leading to major leaps in understanding by AI models, such as in health and financial markets. Chainlink Chief Scientist @AriJuels, and Chainlink Advisor and former AI Advocacy Lead at Google, @lmoroney, came together to discuss how Chainlink’s privacy-preserving oracles and protected pipelines for machine-learning security can advance AI ↓

Web2 systems—such as centralized exchanges—are inescapable today. My PhD student Yan Ji @iseriohn42 works on the pragmatic idea of endowing Web2 systems with Web3-style trust assurances, e.g., proof of liabilities (eprint.iacr.org/2021/1350). Increasingly relevant post-FTX.
While presenting proof of liabilities at #CSAW22, I was asked “what’s the incentive for CEXes to implement GPoL”. I guess one of the lessons to be learned after FTX, is that it’s urgent for these centralized service providers to EARN users’ trust.

Congratulations to my (now former) PhD student Kushal Babel @KushalBabel! He successfully defended his PhD thesis and has just joined @monad_xyz. Kushal's dissertation focuses on ways to measure and combat exploitative practices in DeFi, e.g.: piped.video/watch?v=VXpUGod6…. His work at hasn't just been outstanding, but also accelerated in the home stretch. Keep your eyes peeled for his work on entirely new types of DeFi instruments, coming out soon... I feel both lucky and proud to work with my PhD students at @cornell_tech / @cornell.

Live demo of Liquefaction by @danivilardell77 at @CryptoCanal EthDam, jointly with @OasisProtocol. Take My Ape (a Liquefaction app) allows anyone to own a Bored Ape for 15 minutes—for the price of a single Ethereum transaction. Public release coming soon after Dani's preview.
IC3's @danivilardell77 takes the stage at @CryptoCanal ETHDam to discuss Liquefaction, a novel method for privately liquefying blockchain assets. Dani will conduct a live demonstration of Liquefaction on May 10th at 11:15 CEST. This project is a collaboration with @OasisProtocol 🐵 We'll share a video of the demo. Stay tuned.

One of our upcoming demos of how Liquefaction changes the meaning of ownership. Own Bored Ape #8180 for the cost of a single Ethereum transaction... for 10 minutes.
What is ownership in Web3? With Liquefaction, the meaning is shifting. @AriJuels will demo how anyone can cheaply gain full—though temporary—ownership of a Bored Ape. Rethinking digital assets starts here. Join us at NFT.NYC 2025 to explore what ownership really means in the age of NFTs.

The key to key management is to know your risks. Key loss, leakage, and theft are different types of failures. Ittay Eyal @ittayeyal will discuss his pioneering research around these issues, which began with eprint.iacr.org/2021/1522. (At IC3 NFT gallery opening on 3 Oct.)

Some people have asked me how you go about getting a novel published. Once you have a complete draft, you send out queries to agents. Then you await their responses. Here's what that looks like. Repeat 50x.

Yes, you probably are, @franklinisbored! NFTs are an important addition to blockchain curriculum. (Corrections to Twitter noise: This was my talk at IC3 event at Cornell Tech, not a Harvard course. $100k referred to collection floor price.)

Last night's test run of display for IC3 NFT gallery opening on Monday. Videographer (me) gives sense of scale. Trippy vortex noise is just the soothing sound of NYC at night. @phildaian @initc3org

Many thanks to @taliakaplin for @CNBC interview today on misleading narratives around AI and blockchains. Also how focus on prices distracts from blockchain innovation (right after news about Bitcoin price swings!). ...and a bit on The Oracle. cnbc.com/video/2024/04/10/bi…

Yes!
This is why Ethereum needs PROF. MEV-Blocker, MEV-Share etc. operate in a very fragile trust model, and force users to choose between privacy and inclusion likelihood. PROF circumvents such tradeoffs and privacy risks. More info: prof-project.github.io

Thanks to Uniswap for their generous support. Until the emergence of tools to mitigate MEV—something we're working on—I hope that predicting impact will be a useful stopgap measure. @UniswapFND @FKoushanfar
Replying to @UniswapFND
In R&D, @AriJuels and @FKoushanfar have received a grant to research and build an MEV Estimator Prototype This work will allow swappers to better predict whether MEV will occur, and to what extent they will be impacted, prior to executing a transaction on Uniswap
