This is how the aurora moves. Filmed in real-time, overhead one winter night. Not sped up, not slowed down. What you see is what my eyes saw. 😍 I bet many of you, after this weekend, have a newfound understanding of why we stay out all night in -35°C!

Polar night officially begins today. The sun will now remain below the horizon 24/7 for a few weeks. This does not mean total darkness, it means the most gorgeous hours long sunless sunrise/sunsets. Unreal pinks and blues. But also darkness. A lot of darkness..

Another shot of last night's light pillars. Click to see full width. It really is spectacular being in the middle of something like this. You almost expect to be beamed up. Light pillars happen when light from streetlights reflect on tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.

The most insane light pillars I've seen in a long time! Shot an hour ago. Felt like being in the middle of an alien invasion. 😍 These are caused by light from streetlights etc. reflecting on tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. The moon on the right. @ProfBrianCox

Up here the aurora is something that's just there. Like clouds floating by. People need to get to where they're going, everyday life carries on. But when the lights explode in the sky, colors dancing wildly, even the most hardened northerners look up and let out a "wow".

The elusive blue aurora. Barely visible to the eye but really comes out in photos. To the eye it looked like a strange moving light gray haze. Shining here with the planet Jupiter, the Beehive Cluster, red and green aurora. If you can, go stargazing at a dark location. 🌠♥️

Sunrise was 30 minutes ago, sunset is in 50 minutes. This is about as bright as it gets here now. Polar night starts in a few days, when the sun won't rise at all. We will still get about this level of light for a couple hours during the day as the sun rolls by below the horizon.

March is coming up! The equinoxes are prime time for the aurora. Like the shows we've been getting lately, the aurora around the equinox tends to be explosive to say the least. With colorful coronas like these lighting up the sky, spectacular way to end the season.

Seeing the aurora over calm open water, in complete silence, is a truly ethereal experience. The window of time in fall before the snow comes and lakes freeze is an amazing time for stargazing. Watching the sky and it's reflection with the mist rising off the water in between.
