247 years ago, it was accepted fact that the world should be governed by kings. Lords ruled over peasants, and slavery was embraced by the elite in nearly every country on earth.
A group of radicals had a different idea. “All men are created equal,” they wrote in our Declaration of Independence.
That spark lit the fire of freedom that eventually spread across the globe and ended slavery everywhere. It started here.
Inspired by us, France fought a revolution for “freedom, equality, fraternity” and eventually ended slavery. The British empire followed suit.
Thomas Jefferson led the charge to ban slavery in the new territories of Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.
We banned the slave trade in 1808. We fought a civil war to end slavery in the 1860s. We fought the fights for suffrage and civil rights (for women too!).
The last country on earth to ban slavery was Mauritania in 1981.
The beginning of the end for global slavery was sparked by a few of our founding fathers who believed that ALL were created equal. It’s fair to say they believed that black lives mattered, too.
That’s just one of the reasons this is a GREAT COUNTRY, and why we should all celebrate America today. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
