ALT We are sorry to see Louise leave her role in the Cabinet. As Transport Secretary she has continuously delivered for public transport, making life better for the travelling public and transport workers. In her previous roles in the Shadow Cabinet, Louise has always been on the side of working people and used her politics and position to stand up for what matters to trade unionists and their families. In Government, Louise has carried through on Labour’s manifesto pledges, championing the start of a publicly owned railway and the hard graft of resetting industrial relations. She has created a more publicly accountable railway that works for everyone, and we are proud to have worked alongside her in this goal. As the passenger in chief she delivered real change, and we thank her for all the work she has done to lay the groundwork for the future of our railways. We wish her all the best in the future.

ALT ASLEF, the train drivers’ union, is dismayed that Cllr Greg Marshall has been excluded from the shortlist for selection to become the Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Broxtowe. Greg is a strong trade unionist and has stood shoulder to shoulder with rail and other workers in our campaigning and recent industrial action for fair pay and conditions at work. ASLEF backed Greg through the Party nomination process and we back him now. We, along with fellow trade unions, call for the decision to be revisited and for Greg Marshall to be included on the shortlist for Broxtowe.

ALT Royal Mail’s decision to stop using rail freight must be reviewed. This is a disaster for the climate, air quality and our already-congested roads. There will also be implications for jobs on the railway. It’s time for a level playing field to make it easier for companies to choose to move goods by rail, and an end to subsidising road freight at the expense of more sustainable options. We have engaged with accessibility groups throughout this process and listened carefully to passengers as well as my colleagues in Parliament. The proposals that have resulted from this process do not meet the high thresholds set by Ministers, and so the Government has asked train operators to withdraw their proposals.

ALT ASLEF is firmly anti-austerity. This legislation will impact the most vulnerable in our society, pushing hundreds of thousands of people into poverty, people who have already experienced 14 years of the Conservative's economic attacks. There must be real consultation on all proposed changes and proper time must be given to consider the results before a vote on any changes can take place. We urge the Government to listen to the concerns raised by Labour politicians and disabled organisations and charities and reconsider this course of action.
