"We must come to see, with one of our distinguished jurists, that 'justice too long delayed is justice denied.'" — The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., "Letter from Birmingham Jail," April 16, 1963
Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom.
As we honor this history, we celebrate Black joy, resilience, and the pioneers who fought for civil rights. This day also serves as a reminder that pursuing true equality requires continuous, collective action.
The Washington State Attorney General’s Office is committed to anti-racism, and we’re defending voting rights, fighting discrimination, and dismantling systemic inequities across Washington state.
Happy Juneteenth!
