The Boeing X-32 was a multi-purpose jet fighter in the Joint Strike Fighter contest. It lost to the Lockheed Martin X-35 demonstrator, which was further developed into the F-35 Lightning II.

This F-15 Streak Eagle broke 8 time-to-climb world records between Jan. 16 & Feb. 1, 1975. In setting the last of the 8 records, it reached an altitude of 98,425 feet just 3 minutes, 27.8 seconds from brake release at takeoff & "coasted" to nearly 103,000 ft. before descending.

Northrop-McDonnell Douglas YF-23A Black Widow II
In 1991, after extensive flight testing, the USAF announced that the Lockheed YF-22A won the airframe competition. The YF-23A on display came to the Museum in 2000.

Here's a look at rivets, clecos, and a bucking bar used on the B-17D "The Swoose" during restoration at the National Museum of the USAF in June of 2025. This aircraft is the oldest surviving B-17 Flying Fortress and the only D model in existence.

The Flanker-C on display was built in 1989. It served first in the Soviet Navy & then the Ukrainian Air Force after the Soviet Union collapsed. #avgeek
The development of the J79 turbojet began in 1952 as a more powerful follow-up to the General Electric J47 turbojet. The engine generated a maximum of 17,000 pounds of thrust (-15 version) with the afterburner operating.
Fairchild Republic A-10A Thunderbolt II
The A-10A on display was flown on Jan. 21, 1991, by Capt. Paul Johnson on an eight-hour rescue support mission during Operation Desert Storm, for which he was awarded the Air Force Cross, the USAF's second highest award for valor. #avgeek
The YF-23A competed in the late '80s/early '90s against the YF-22A in the Advanced Tactical Fighter program.
In '91 the USAF announced that the Lockheed YF-22A won the airframe competition. Northrop ended its ATF program, and the YF-23A on display came to @afmuseum in 2000.

EF-111A Ravens, known affectionately as "Fat Tails" and "Spark Varks," (the F-111 is known as the Aardvark), served as tactical electronic jamming aircraft in the 1980s and 1990s.

Lockheed VC-140B JetStar
In 1961, the U.S. Air Force acquired six Lockheed VC-140B JetStars to transport the President of the United States, high-ranking government officials and other heads of state.

McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender
The KC-10A on display, serial number 84-0191, was instrumental in 1986 during Operation El Dorado Canyon, serving as a “mother ship” for an attacking element of US F-111s, including the F-111F on display in the Museum.

The Thunderchief on display began operational service in 1964 as a standard F-105F. In 1967 it joined the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing in Thailand, where it flew combat missions for nearly three years.

The A-10 is the first USAF aircraft designed specifically for close air support of ground forces. It is named for the famous P-47 Thunderbolt, a fighter often used in a close air support role during the latter part of World War II.

McDonnell Douglas F-4C Phantom II
The aircraft on display is the one in which Col. Olds, the pilot, and Lt. Stephen Croker, the weapons system officer, destroyed two MiG-17s in a single day, May 20, 1967.
