Pennsylvania
Service. Solidarity. Camaraderie. This is the ethos of the American Communist Party. When you join ACP, you'll take part in all three - sometimes all in one day. This May Day, ACP PA and @ACP_NJ gathered in Philadelphia. We cleaned hundreds of gallons of trash off the streets in North Philly, connecting with our neighbors along the way. Then we stood in solidarity with our fellow workers at the May Day rally. We wrapped up the day with a celebration together with our friends and allies from outside the party, mapping out our next moves to continue to grow our movement.

Our comrade Kyle gave squash seed kits to festival goers at the Fireman’s Fest in rural Clearfield County. He developed a compost at his farm with a microbial/fungal network which expands well on land stripped from past coal mining. Let’s plant the seeds for a better tomorrow!

Our comrade Nick organized a cleanup of Fifth Street Park in Shamokin, the heart of Pennsylvania’s Coal Region. As the Coal Region wasted away with the decline of industry, jobs left & crime rose, yet locals remain hopeful for better days. Let’s be the change we want to see!

Finally, we want to thank @ACP_NC for the incredible work they’ve done in the Hurricane Helene disaster recovery effort. We learned a lot and were deeply moved by what we saw & experienced during our time in North Carolina. Hurricanes Ida & Sandy live in our recent memory, with the former having caused over $70 billion worth of damage to our region back in 2021. It is imperative that we are prepared to respond these situations of crisis. Below you can find a short video summary of our trip:

Operating funds for day-to-day maintenance of facilities, park rangers, youth programs & other staff remain far below needed levels, leaving many Rec centers ill-equipped & in deteriorating condition. The youth deserve safe & clean facilities! It's time to get involved!

By midday, we drove into Asheville where we were met by our comrade Ezra from @ACP_NC We were finally received by our donation recipient Sarah of Asheville’s IBEW Local 238 and other members of the local. They have been operating a successful donation center in West Asheville since the storm first struck. We were told about the hardships that people are facing in the region, thousands missing or unaccounted for, roads wiped out, poor water quality, lack of electricity, low payouts from insurance companies, and much more.

Holmesburg Prison is haunted by the memory of severe human rights abuses by doctors conducting experiments on inmates, many of whom simply couldn’t afford bail. Locals expressed concerns about decaying infrastructure & crime in their community yet were thankful for the support.

We fired up our chainsaw and got to work clearing logs and other debris from an abandoned commercial lot along the main thoroughfare of town. We lended a hand and conversed with locals & other volunteers, many of whom’s businesses & homes had been completely destroyed.

In the morning we visited the towns of Old Fort & Swannanoa, NC where we witnessed widespread devastation. We walked through town looking for volunteer work. The dried mud deposits from the flood waters along with debris from destroyed buildings filled the air with hazardous silica dust, yet locals remained hard at work rebuilding their community.
