No arms ➡️ better legs A go-to for @korfist for taking the arms out of the equation to force the legs to do more of the work Normally in sprinting, the arms help balance the cross-crawl pattern. But remove that, and the athlete has to run more efficiently and effectively from the lower body alone Add assisted sprinting to the mix and it’s a powerful way to challenge an athlete's coordination and output

Loading 🤝 Anatomy When we understand how the hamstrings work with the rest of the body, we can use foot angles, torso rotation, and a variety of loads to holistically strengthen and prepare them for sprinting As preparing the hamstrings for sprinting requires more than just sprinting, using external load and knowledge like this allows us to apply specific loading to build force capacity for the exact adaptation we want Snippet from @korfist at the 1080 Summit in Los Angeles, showing new exercises with a variety of loading on the 1080 Syncro

Assisted sprints: part of the whole process, not just the peak @les7spellman teaches an athlete how to dribble in 30 seconds and explains why it's such a powerful drill to use on Day 1 Exposing athletes to assistance early gets them up to speed quicker (literally), so assisted sprinting can be programmed sooner and used throughout the entire training program for maximum adaptation. Instead of being traditionally saved for just the last phase Snippet from the 1080 Summit in Los Angeles

Changing crossover gait in 3 sessions: A case study on constraint-led speed work Crossover gait happens when an athlete steps across the midline, throwing off alignment, reducing efficiency, and increasing joint stress In just three sessions, this athlete cleaned up their pattern with a mix of targeted drills, both resisted and assisted (all at just 3kg of load): -Straight-leg bounds -Single-leg cycles -Ankle jumps -Hands-overhead running -Resisted sprints at 5m (9kg) and 10m (6.5kg) The key: using load as a constraint to guide self-organization, challenging the athlete to naturally find the pattern of striking under the hips instead of crossing over the midline Keep load in your back pocket as a tool to modify drills you already believe in, creating different movement problems for your athletes to overcome with efficiency and intent Credit: @Dunn_15

“I sprint in soccer, why do I need to train it?” ⚽️ Speed is a quality developed in training, soccer is where it transfers By keeping the two together, trying to develop everything at once, you often develop neither By separating the two, you can focus on mechanics, efficiency, and pure speed without the chaos Great example here from U19 SK Slovan Bratislava working through force- and load-velocity profiling in 🇸🇰📍Slovakia 🎥 cred, IG: chrisitianstankovic and elixcenter

2-Steps, All the Time ✌️🦵 Two big, exaggerated steps to drive stride length through intentful hip extension. Part of @les7spellman resisted drill progression to sharpen acceleration mechanics without the full intensity of sprinting The lower neural and physical load allows for higher frequency and more exposure to improve this important movement pattern Resistance amplifies the need to push and produce force, while also adding just enough constraint to reinforce posture and mechanics. Typical loads: 6–10kg Snippet from 1080 Summit Los Angeles

His team layers data from Force-Velocity Profiling, sprint video analysis, mobility screens, and more to fully understand each athlete That insight not only helps build a plan based on what the athlete needs, but also helps predict how they'll respond to training. Week to week, the plan adapts just as the athlete does, using data from training to guide each modification (And thank you @Carlin_Isles for the fast demo)

New research: 10 Sessions of Assisted Sprinting Leads to Speed Gains Overview: -6 high school athletes (~16 y/o) did 10 overspeed training sessions with a 1080 Sprint -Researchers set out to test their own protocols and analyze how the kinematics changed, as well as changes in max running speed (5m Fly) -Assistance loads were chosen to achieve 103-105% of each athlete's speed, ranging from 2-5kg Results: -Athletes had a non-significant but large effect of increase in 5m Fly velocity (+2.94%) -Other large effects included decrease in ground contact time, increase in flight time, and increase in horizontal distance -Small/trivial changes in stride length and stride rate were observed. Thoughts: -Interesting results for how overspeed kinematically affects sprinting and can be a targeted intervention for those variables, on top of improving sprint speed -However, this was only over 5 weeks, as most training blocks happen over 12+ weeks, which was noted as a limitation Link to study: researchgate.net/publication…

Use load to reach the speeds, and consequent mechanics, you actually want to train 🤔 Overview -Resisted sprinting is often met with concern for its potential to disrupt mechanics and reduce performance -But sprinting mechanics are velocity-specific, acceleration doesn’t look like top speed, with or without resistance -This study asked: if we compare steps at the same velocity, do mechanics actually change under load? Methods -14 males performed sprints unresisted and at 20%, 40%, and 60% velocity decrement (Vdec) using a 1080 Sprint -Athletes first completed load–velocity profiles to calculate the exact loads needed to match target sprint velocities -7 kinetic and 12 kinematic variables captured using force plates and 3D motion analysis Results -Vertical impulse increased and contact time got longer at higher Vdecs (as expected) -Ankle range of motion and hip angle at toe-off were slightly greater at 40–60% Vdec -But across most variables, mechanics remained largely unchanged when velocity was matched Takeaways -When comparing steps at the same speed, mechanics were mostly unchanged, resisted vs unresisted -The mechanical changes seen under load were driven by slower sprinting velocities, not the resistance itself -Train with load to hit specific velocities, velocity to hit mechanics, and mechanics to get results 🧠 Researchers: @ssilva_edson, @MattCrossNZ, @PierreSamozino, @jb_morin 🔗 Paper: researchgate.net/publication…

Resisted sprints work, but the loads you use matter Overview -This study compared light (10% Vdec) vs heavy (50% Vdec) resisted sprints to see how they influence sprint adaptations -The goal was to determine whether heavier loads drive greater improvements or if different loads target different sprint qualities Methods -36 male and female field-sport athletes (soccer and rugby) were assigned to either 10% Vdec or 50% Vdec groups -Both groups completed 12 sessions (1x/week), performing 10 resisted sprints per session at their assigned Vdec -Force-velocity and load-velocity profiling were done pre- and post-training to guide load selection and assess individual adaptation Results -10% Vdec showed slightly better gains in force and power output and 50% Vdec showed slightly better gains in velocity, opposite of what the researchers predicted -Individual responses varied widely, suggesting that an athlete’s pre-training force-velocity profile may influence how they adapt to resisted sprints Takeaways -Resisted sprints improve performance, but the load-adaptation relationship is individual, not necessarily light for velocity and heavy for force -To maximize training, match resisted sprint loads to the athlete’s force-velocity profile for targeted adaptations Cross MR, et al. (2018). Training at maximal power in resisted sprinting: Optimal load determination and methodology and pilot results in team sport athletes. PLoS ONE, 13(4).
