Hey, Since a lot of us here are sharing art to grow and also aiming for Sentient discord roles, I thought I’d write down something I learned about why our art doesn’t always improve, even if we keep creating.
First thing is discipline. Motivation is nice but not forever. Some days we feel inspired, some days not. If we only draw when mood is good, progress is slow. Better to make a system. For me, I always do a warm-up sketch and try 2–4 hours focus time. where I turn off everything and just focus on art.
Inspiration is not progress. Watching tutorials or saving references looks good, but it is not practice. Progress comes only when we draw.
Another trap is chasing “art style” too early. We all want a style people can recognise, but style only comes after drawing a lot. Style will come later, like handwriting. First build skills, then style will grow by itself.
Fundamentals matter. Perspective, anatomy, proportion may feel boring, but they are the base of good art. Without them, nice brushes or colors can’t save it. Learning fundamentals makes your art strong and pro in the long run. When I started, I made this mistake kek just buying brushes and directly trying. I got only 10% outcome.
One thing that makes us slow is when we avoid criticism. We don’t like bad words about our art, but if we practice wrong, the mistake will stay forever. Feedback may hurt our feelings, but it helps our skill. Just take feedback from people who know more.
Another problem is comparing our art with others. On Discord we see some artists get roles fast with just a few arts, and it makes us feel sad or jealous. But instead of comparing, better to study their work. Look how they do it, learn from it, and practice in your own way.
Also, Comfort zones also hold us back. If you are good at characters, try props or backgrounds. Try things not easy for you, that’s how you grow.
And last, you just have to draw enough. Improvement comes from volume tbh. Once I drew one art every night for a month over 35+ arts. That’s when I saw how much practice matters.
So if you’re grinding here for discord roles and want to level up, keep these in mind. Don’t rely only on motivation bruh, don’t fear critique, finish your art, push out of your comfort zone, and most of all just keep drawing. The more you create, the better you’ll get.
Wishing you all the very best!
