This is the moment yall, where we dismantle the genre machine. I was happy to produce and write for AMERIICAN REQUIEM, along with Beyoncé and Dion "NO ID" Wilson. When I catch inspiration, the words and chords pour out of me. What a honor to then see how brilliantly Beyoncé made them her own and THEN further enhanced the lyrical statement, synthesizing it into the larger body of work. After the harrowing vocal prelude that happens to start Cowboy Carter, you get to hear these words that read like a proclaimation. "Do you hear me or do you fear me? " or better yet in our Louisiana vernacular "Looka dere, Looka dere"
Prior to this, Dion and I had been on a creative journey, having conversations about the state of music and where we could take it. We'd been having these conversations for years but something about recent times has felt ripe with the power of actualization. When I picked up my guitar and notebook to write this song I put my trust God to liberate my creative mind, as I always do when channeling inspiration.
Quincy Jones told me, as he also wrote in his forward to my WE ARE album, "it's up to you to de categorize American music!! " , which is what Duke Ellington told him. I really believe that is our generations role, led by a few artists willing to take this leap.
@Beyonce, very grateful for my contribution to your brilliant album, a work of such unimaginable impact and artistic firepower by a once in a generation artist. So glad that we finally got to collaborate with each other at this time.
Producing and writing for AMERIICAN REQUIEM was an example of extraordinary alignment—when many leading artists see a similar vision at the same time, that's when you know a major shift is happening. A new era, long time coming. Let's liberate ourselves from genre and break the barriers that marginalize who we are and the art that we create. Grateful also for the contribution by my brother @dixson and the other collaborators who made this opening statement of Cowboy Carter possible.

There will never be another. A truly singular example of modern artistic excellence and profound humanity. When I'd call him, he would dive right into telling stories and I was all ears. I wish those conversations had been recorded because they were drenched in unlimited insight, wisdom and soul. Whether it was his equal parts awe-inspiring and ridiculously humorous recounting of how he helped shaped cultural history, or our shared love of family, world travels, exploring faith and rising from dark times. Almost everything was discussed and I was always grateful for our relationship.
To fully unlock and reflect upon it all right now is just too much to process.
His anecdotes about work ethic and his constructive feedback of my work were significant factors in sharpening my craft—for instance as a collaborator and unofficial producer on the We Are and World Music Radio albums that changed my artistic trajectory.
But some of the most powerful advice he shared with me was rooted in how to develop your humanity.
The power of prayers and mantras, which he said every morning . His insight about how "Your music can never be more or less than you are as a human being, so work on the human part" or how he and Ray Charles developed inner strength during the civil rights era by instilling within that "Not one ounce of my self worth depends on anyone else's acceptance of me" , a few examples of MANY.
When I won the Academy Award in my speech I evoked his words about the power of 12 Notes, how we all get the same ones and it's up to us what we do with them.
When he wasn't able to travel anymore I would always make a point to visit him in LA to show love, talk life and play for him. The last time we saw each other in person I played for him but this time asked if I could record him listening to me for posterity sake . In the clip I'm playing his "Ai No Corrida" then going into a Chopin waltz, then some blues and then Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight" . Always the best for Q.
You will be forever missed but my goodness did you make your mark sir !! It's on us now to carry it forward 🤲🏾✨

Singing at the Super Bowl in my hometown stadium, mid field at a piano my wife painted was truly a full circle life experience. In stark contrast, on the day before the big game we performed on a local high school football field for my first ever Love Riot Festival. The idea being to present a completely free music festival putting money back into the community by partnering with local community groups, churches, high schools, and non profits in service to the forgotten parts of our city by boosting local economy, shining a light on culture and providing jobs when big events like the Super Bowl come to town. It's a love offering to curate and share six hours of performances by living musical icons, Grammy award winning artists, local community groups, choirs, musicians and dancers. We did it! Processing all this in the context of my own personal journey, and in the context of the collective journey of this country, a lot music began to pour out of me and I'm want to start sharing some of this new music.
I'm so inspired that I just decided to release a set of two new songs today, a digital only A/B side record entitled MY UNITED STATE. One of the tracks on MY UNITED STATE is a Beethoven coded , new age blues coded , ambient music coded interpolation of the national anthem that I almost considered playing at the Super Bowl, but then took a completely different musical direction. The one similarity is that both versions include the Triggerman beat sample in it — a staple of New Orleans bounce and hip-hop culture — which I'm proud to say is a first in NFL history to have a recording sample included in the anthem. The other song on MY UNITED STATE is entitled Notes From My Future Self. It's me speaking to a younger version of myself from present day, perhaps even from the future. Sonically and lyrically it's such an achievement for me. Big thank to my team(s) (@JemelMcWilliams et al) for making all this happen this weekend, to my beautiful wife Suleika for her brilliant artistry painting the Super Bowl piano in between chemotherapy treatments, to all my fellow performers and to @NFL and @RocNation for having us. Thank God for all these amazing blessings 🙏🏾
