Happy 50th otter-versary to the Colorado River Otter! These slippery, playful creatures play an important role in strengthening the health of our rivers and we have seen River Otter populations successfully spread across the western slope ahead of this milestone anniversary of their reintroduction. This year the 250/150/50 celebrations include all of us and Coloradotter’s river otters. I look forward to celebrating many more of the mighty River Otters!

It’s summertime in Colorado, and extreme heat can be dangerous. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and act quickly. Stay cool, drink plenty of water, take breaks from the heat, and check on neighbors, children, older adults, and pets.

I am deeply saddened at the destruction and suffering caused by the recent earthquake in Venezuela. It’s during times like these, moments of crisis, that we really see the strength and heart of humanity shine through. We’re seeing that now with the fires affecting Colorado and the countless people volunteering and donating to help those being impacted. And we’re seeing the very same with support from Coloradans for our Venezuelan friends. I’m proud to see Coloradans stepping up to support those affected by this terrible disaster. We stand with you, Venezuela. Some of the organizations Coloradans can support include: International Red Cross (@ICRC) Third Wave Volunteers Global Empowerment Mission (@GEMmissions) The Wayuu Taya Foundation (@wayuutaya) Direct Relief (@DirectRelief) World Central Kitchen (@WCKitchen) And Many Others

Families affected by these fires not only have to think about keeping themselves safe, but also making sure their animals can get out safely. HorseAlert helps connect horses, donkeys and mule owners with volunteer trailer drivers when evacuation orders are issued. Another example of Coloradans stepping up and helping each other out in this time of need. denver7.com/news/local-news/…

When I ran for Governor, I promised to bring free universal preschool to every Colorado family, and we got it done. Now, families across our state are saving money while our youngest learners get a strong start with free preschool and free full-day kindergarten.

Colorado has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to protecting our land, forests, and outdoor spaces that make our state so special. Colorado was the first state to include forest protections in its constitution: Article XVIII, Section 6 directs lawmakers to protect forests and keep them in good condition. Nearly 150 years later, that commitment still matters for our economy, water, wildlife, recreation, and way of life. As we face more wildfire risk and more pressure on our public lands, we will keep working to protect Colorado’s forests for future generations. kunc.org/the-colorado-dream/…

As Wildland Firefighter Week of Remembrance comes to a close, the impact of this week continues to be felt deeply across Colorado. We continue to mourn the losses of Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson, and honor their incredible sacrifice. With active wildfires affecting communities right now, the risks and sacrifices of wildland firefighters are more present than ever. Thank you to every single firefighter in our state working to protect the places we love.

Last week at the Western Governors’ Association meeting, I met with U.S. Forest Service Director Tom Schultz about wildfire response in Colorado and moderated a panel with him, Department of Natural Resources Executive Director Dan Gibbs, and other experts about the future of forest management in the West. Now more than ever the collaboration between local, state and federal government in managing our forests, and preventing and responding to wildfires, is vital to our shared success.

From Colorado’s frontline firefighters, local law enforcement, and our state workers including the hard working women and men of CDOT, Colorado has no shortage of bravery and can-do when times call for it. Thanks to CDOT’s around-the-clock efforts to safely reopen the CO-165 bridge, it was re-opened after less than 11 hours, allowing emergency operations to flow smoothly and residents to evacuate safely. We are coordinating to support the brave firefighters who are protecting Coloradans and our communities. 9news.com/article/news/local…
