Pluggable transports empowers you to choose your method to stay anonymous—tor or i2p. @nymproject mixnets are coming soon too. DarkFi enforces privacy at the network level. Here’s how: When a node starts, it initializes a peer-to-peer network with three session types: - InboundSession – Handles incoming connections. - OutboundSession – Manages outgoing connections and ensures the host pool stays populated. - SeedSession – A temporary session that connects to seed nodes for initial peer discovery, then terminates once synced. - Connections are established via Acceptor (incoming) or Connector (outgoing), supporting multiple transport types for flexibility. Each connection is wrapped in a Channel, allowing custom protocols to be attached—essential for application-specific networking. Nodes maintain three lists to filter peers: - Whitelist (max 1000) – Verified, reliable peers. - Greylist (max 5000) – Untested peers under evaluation. - Anchorlist – Actively connected peers, the backbone of the session. How it works: - New peers enter the greylist when discovered via GetAddr/Addr broadcasts. - Greylist housekeeping periodically pings random peers—responsive ones move to the whitelist, dead ones are purged. - On shutdown, whitelisted peers revert to the greylist, forcing re-verification on restart. - Active connections are promoted to the anchorlist; failures downgrade them back to greylist. This ensures only proven, active peers shape your network view. DarkFi assumes every peer is hostile. Key defenses: - Smart bans – Violate protocol? Immediate blacklist. No appeals. - Resource scoring – Messages consume "work" (CPU) and "bytes" (bandwidth/memory) metrics. Abuse the network, and your channel gets throttled or banned. - Blast radius control – The P2P subsystem runs isolated. Even if attacked, the rest of the system stays operational. Unlike Bitcoin’s naive backoff throttling or BitTorrent’s tit-for-tat, DarkFi dynamically chokes bad actors before they drain resources. Choose your defenses against surveillance wisely. Run a node. Test the network. Break it if you can.

Why we need DarkFi The web is completely centralized. We know this, but many are complacent because they take things for granted and are submitting to the corporate structure. We have a monopoly of the big browser, with Google and Mozilla controlling two web engines. This is all developers are able to use. They cannot easily build applications in a sovereign way that reach the everyday users. The other thing we have is a highly centralized set of Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) like Akamai and Amazon. Developers use these for faster websites, but sacrifice their ownership of the data, creating a sort of "man in the middle" attack. Also we have VPNs who claim to protect users but in fact are honeypots of centrally-controlled and monitoring corporations. Users are simply tunneling all their data to opaque data centers. Metamask is but one of many web wallets that uses centralized spyware like CDNs that can easily track users' behavior. This is not the web we are fighting for. Let there be dark.

Why Proof of Work? In 2023, DarkFi released the DarkFi PoS alpha testnet with a modified version of the Ouroboros Crypsinous anonymous PoS consensus algorithm. DarkFi originally chose this direction since PoS has finality, which means once a block is confirmed, it cannot be reversed or changed. This is good because it is deterministic, and also reduces resource usage since state updates can never be reversed so less data is stored. However, without a wide distribution of tokens, PoS systems can easily become oligarchic. In our implementation of Ouroboros Crypsinous, the probability of winning a block was quasi-linear with the amount staked. This meant that the initial balances of validators would determine the future power structure of the blockchain. Validators who start with large token balances would continue to gain rewards, compounding their stake and influence over time. Furthermore, PoS requires some token predistribution event to bootstrap the balances of validators, which is difficult to do without compromising user anonymity (an airdrop on a transparent blockchain or a public sale with KYC felt unacceptable to us due to the anonymity trade-offs). These questions led us to switch to PoW consensus. The update took us over a year of work since it required a lot of deep wide-ranging changes to the codebase. But the end result enables a fully anonymous and peer-to-peer token distribution.

Everyone's chasing the next 100x shitcoin while governments are building financial panopticons. CBDC rollouts. Biometric verification. Transaction monitoring. Social credit integration. DarkFi isn't a speculative bet. It's infrastructure and user-facing products. Let there be dark.

You need freedom of communication and financial freedom at the same time. DarkFi already has anonymous chat with DarkIRC. DarkFi will have a blockchain that enables financial applications: anonymous payments, darkDAOs, and anonymous DEXes. Enter the dark forest.

Last month, the @TornadoCash addresses were removed from the OFAC sanctions list. However, the case remains against @rstormsf despite prosecutors withholding evidence and making false claims. DarkFi learned from this, and is building anonymous applications for everyone.

The Consequences of Centralization Looking at large-scale DeFi hacks, there are four categories of targets. 1. Centralized bridges. These are owned and operated by companies and corporations who have full control over the transactions that go through them. 2. Proprietary wallets. With the hype surrounding Solana, people glossed over the fact that 90% of their wallets are proprietary and closed source 3. Closed source Smart Contracts. Solana enables closed source, opaque smart contracts whereas at least with Ethereum, you are able to read its source code or decompile it. 4. Man-in-the-Middle attacks. These attacks mostly happen through infrastructure. Many web apps are built with JavasScript and NodeJS, which bundle packages with them that are downloaded automatically online. But it’s complex enough to make small typos hard to notice, allowing for malware to be installed on your machine. And when this happens, your users also get this malware because they just download it from you. @RektHQ continues to compile these hacks. They stem from poor engineering principles we have been taught to avoid in crypto, but lazy developers continue to put themselves and their users at risk. DarkFi builds its own wallets, smart contracts fully open source and auditable. DarkFi won’t risk users’ security by guiding them through centralized bridges or bloating our apps with packages that are difficult to audit.

Anonymity is freedom. Resistance is encrypted. Darkness is your ally. Adopt the dark.
