What happens if you drop an anti-apple?
In a paper published today in @Nature, the ALPHA collaboration at CERN’s Antimatter Factory shows that, within the precision of their experiment, atoms of antihydrogen – a positron orbiting an antiproton – fall to Earth in the same way as their matter equivalents.
This result is a milestone in the study of the properties and behaviour of antimatter.

Between the 1960s and the mid-1980s, dozens of women worked #AtCERN as “scanners”. Their job consisted in identifying the trajectories of the particles in the images taken inside the bubble chambers.
“Scanning” took place around the clock. The work was done manually, using a pencil and a sheet of paper to note down the coordinates of where the interactions had taken place and a description of the interactions. The shifts only lasted four hours since scanners worked in complete darkness, which put a lot of strain on the eyes.

CERN’s Antimatter Factory is the only place in the world where scientists can store and study antiprotons. But scientists at the BASE experiment hope to change this state of matter with an apparatus designed to store and transport antimatter.

In a recent study of proton–proton collision data from Run 2 of the #LHC, the @ATLASexperiment provides the most comprehensive overview of its search for supersymmetric particles. The study gives us a better understanding of which supersymmetry models have not yet been probed.
The theory of supersymmetry suggests that there may be partner particles for each of the known fundamental particles. These partner particles could address shortcomings in current scientific knowledge, such as the source of #darkmatter or even the relationship between the various forces of nature.

Not one, not two, but 12 billion collisions 🎆
During the recent five-week heavy-ion run of the #LHC – the first of #LHCRun3 at the highest-ever energy – the @ALICEexperiment recorded about 12 billion lead–lead collisions.
This year’s collisions are 40 times greater than the total number of collisions recorded in the previous periods of heavy-ion data-aking from 2010 to 2018.
