You know about the Fourth of July, but what about the Ninth? The signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia was a major moment, but the news didn't reach all of colonies at once. It wasn't until July 9, 1776, that the Declaration was printed in New York by John Holt and read aloud, by order of General George Washington, inspiring a group of New Yorkers to march to nearby Bowling Green and tear down a statue of King George III. This printing of the Declaration of Independence is one of several on display at NYPL this year. You can also find Mary Katherine Goddard's 1777 printing, a facsimile of Thomas Jefferson's handwritten fair copy, and two modern reimaginings—Tracy K. Smith's erasure poem "Declaration" and Mindy Belloff's contemporary reprinting of the Goddard broadside. Now through July 7, the Declaration of Independence will be projected onto the facade of our flagship 42nd Street building at sundown during a special weeklong display. The projection is part of NYPL’s commemoration of America’s 250th, which includes free exhibitions, displays, programs and events, a special-edition library card, an anniversary book list, and a public storytelling project for all ages.
