Operating the power grid, managing energy markets and planning the future grid reliably, cost-effectively.

While grid conditions remain stable, summer heat is driving up electricity demand across the MISO region. Ahead of the heat wave, MISO declared Conservative Operations, moving our grid gauge into the yellow Advisory/Warning position. This step helps position every available resource, including generation, transmission, demand response and imports, to support reliability. Preparations included rescheduling planned outages, returning transmission lines to service, and recalling generators from maintenance. We continue to coordinate closely with our member utilities and neighboring grid operators as conditions evolve. Curious about what the colors on our grid gauge mean? The 2026 OMS-MISO Survey results are now available, showing states and utilities across the region are planning record levels of resource additions over the next five years. Member utilities expect to add an average of 15 GW of new accredited summer capacity each year, a pace that would meet the region's growing power needs as demand continues to rise. This annual collaboration between MISO and The Organization of MISO States (OMS), along with MISOโ€™s Planning Resource Auction and Futures analyses, helps inform real-world decisions and long-term planning to support a reliable energy future. MISO has launched the fourth cycle of its Expedited Resource Addition Study (ERAS) process, adding seven projects and approximately 3.7 GW of proposed new capacity to its interconnection pipeline. The Cycle 4 portfolio spans natural gas, solar and battery storage resources across MISO's Central and South regions, with projects targeted for in-service by 2029. Since ERAS launched, the program has accepted or is currently validating 58 projects representing nearly 28 GW of proposed capacity. Of those, 25 projects totaling approximately 11 GW have advanced to completed generator interconnection agreements, with an additional 15 projects representing approximately 8 GW nearing completion. This afternoon, MISO is hosting its annual Summer Readiness Workshop, sharing the 2026 outlook with stakeholders on capacity, operations and the season ahead. This year's Planning Resource Auction produced approximately 142.6 GW of summer capacity, up about 4.8 GW from last year, with new solar additions as the largest contributor. Those additions position the region well to meet an expected summer peak of around 125 GW. With nearly double the solar capacity on the system compared to last year, MISO has refined how it manages shifting net load patterns, steep ramps and evening reliability risks through updated reserve requirements and enhanced forecasting tools. The grid remains stable and MISO has ended its EEA2. Extreme weather will continue over the next few days, and MISO and our members continue to monitor conditions very closely. MISO is currently in a Maximum Generation Warning, which is a notification to prepare for a ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ emergency situation. No public action is needed. Due to significant winter weather, MISO has issued an Energy Emergency Alert 2 (EEA2) for our North and Central regions. EEA2 is triggered when MISO is facing an energy shortage and needs to increase generation available to meet demand. At this time, MISO does not have a need for public conservation. The extreme cold is causing power usage to increase, and we are also seeing unplanned generator outages. By declaring EEA2, MISO operators can access emergency generation not available under normal conditions. Our operators may also purchase emergency generation from neighboring grids if available. The EEA 2 declaration is scheduled to last until 11 a.m. E.S.T. Please continue to follow our website for additional information: misoenergy.org/.

We are closely monitoring winter weather conditions as the storm approaches the MISO region. Our team has taken steps to prepare and is coordinating with members, including declaring Conservative Operations, which is a requirement to defer, delay or recall any non-essential maintenance. We work with our members year-round to prepare for extreme weather operations, including enhancements to forecasting capabilities, dynamic reserves and outage coordination processes. At this time, grid conditions are stable. Visit our website for the latest updates: ow.ly/FobT50Y1VV6. #WinterStorm #GridResilience #GridReliability #PowerGrid
