For decades, Fishers Island—its magnificent 5th hole featured as our cover shot for the Summer 2026 issue—occupied a rare perch in American golf: masterpiece hidden in plain sight. Its isolation—a 45-minute ferry ride off the Connecticut coast—helped, of course, but geography alone did not keep it obscure. The club wanted it that way.
This is a good year for classics. Three of the four major championship hosts in 2026—Aronimink, Shinnecock Hills, and Royal Birkdale—were founded in the 1890s. The baby of the group is Augusta National, founded in the 1930s. There are many other classics in this issue, from little-known links gems in England to iconic clubhouses (including all three of this year’s major venues) and a truly classic instructor/mentor, Butch Harmon. Plus, some newer courses that may achieve classic status someday. Time will tell.
