I was incredibly proud to speak Bethany Rae Fields' name at Prime Minister’s questions today in Parliament.
Bethany was murdered outside her workplace in 2019 by her ex-partner. Bethany approached the police multiple times before her murder and this brutal killing should never have happened. Her Mum, Pauline, and her entire family, show incredible strength as they campaign to create a lasting legacy in her name.
Pauline's campaign aims for Bethany’s initials BRF—"Believe, React, Fast"—to become a standard approach for authorities in handling stalking and abuse cases, shaping related policy, legislation, and guidance.
I’m proud to back her campaign and I was delighted to sit down with Pauline and the Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girl, Jess Phillips, to discuss this heartbreaking case.
As the Prime Minister said in response to my question today, the Government is committed to halving violence against women and girls. I’m encouraged by new steps to improve support for victims, including embedding domestic abuse experts in 999 control rooms.
There’s more to do, and I look forward to continued government reforms on this critical issue.
