Today’s decision is a disappointment, but it's not a surprise. It's the result of coordination by the fossil fuel lobby to dismantle progress toward climate solutions. This ruling does not mean we are out of options! We must call on Congress to pass climate legislation. 1/2

As President, Joe Biden has been — and is — an exceptional leader. He is responsible for developing and signing the most significant investment in climate solutions into law. He helped our nation navigate a global pandemic, ushered in an economic recovery that has created good-paying jobs for Americans across the country, and restored America’s standing abroad. I know that he is not done delivering for the American people and will continue to serve this nation with wisdom and dignity in the coming months. In paving the way for a new generation of leadership, President Biden’s decision is a fitting testament to his profoundly consequential career. I applaud his selfless decision.

As a prosecutor, @KamalaHarris took on Big Oil companies – and won. As @VP, she cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the most significant investment in climate solutions in history, the Inflation Reduction Act. That’s the kind of climate champion we need in the White House. With so much at stake in this year’s election – from strengthening democracy in the US and abroad, to expanding opportunity for the American people, to accelerating climate action – I’m proud to endorse Kamala Harris for President.

Today, President Trump will issue a series of Executive Orders that deny the climate emergency facing our country in favor of a phony “energy emergency”. These performative acts show the pervasive influence that the fossil fuel industry will have in the United States over the next four years. But make no mistake, the global Sustainability Revolution is unstoppable. As was the case in 2017, withdrawing the US from the Paris Agreement is a shortsighted abdication of leadership that will only serve to put our nation at a disadvantage. Clinging to the industries of the past instead of embracing the industries of the future may boost the short-term profits of fossil fuel companies, but it will come at the expense of the broader American economy - including American workers who risk being left behind. This is the first of what will be many attempts to ignore reality and try to stall the world’s unstoppable and irreversible move to a clean energy economy. But these proclamations are not reflective of our political and economic reality. These efforts to roll back progress – particularly the hugely popular clean energy investments in the Inflation Reduction Act – will be met with opposition from both political parties. That’s why, in the coming weeks, months, and years, climate leaders and activists must not be deterred or distracted. From extreme weather disasters like Hurricane Helene and the still burning Los Angeles wildfires, to the growing number of climate refugees, to competitiveness in the global economy, the climate crisis will have profound consequences for the United States over the next four years. If the new Administration won’t lead on this issue, it is up to all of us. Now is the time for Governors, Mayors, business leaders, investors, and activists to put their heads down and do the work that will advance the climate solutions our nation and the world so urgently need. We were able to keep up the pace of climate action during the first Trump Administration, and it is urgent that we take up the mantle once again.

Outraged. Horrified. Shocked. Appalled. Heartbroken. It’s hard to find just one word to express my feelings about the assassination of MN Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. One of the first roles Melissa ever took in politics was working for me in the U.S. Senate. Though she was only there for a short time, she had a lasting impact on our team. I can tell that the same is true of the many others who worked with her throughout her impactful career as a public servant and leading climate advocate. There is absolutely no excuse for political violence and everyone in public life must condemn this horrific tragedy. My prayers go out to her children and all who loved her. I am also praying, along with so many others, for the full recovery of MN Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

COP28 is now on the verge of complete failure. The world desperately needs to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible, but this obsequious draft reads as if OPEC dictated it word for word. It is even worse than many had feared. It is “Of the Petrostates, By the Petrostates and For the Petrostates.” It is deeply offensive to all who have taken this process seriously. There are 24 hours left to show whose side the world is on: the side that wants to protect humanity’s future by kickstarting the orderly phase out of fossil fuels or the side of the petrostates and the leaders of the oil and gas companies that are fueling the historic climate catastrophe. In order to prevent COP28 from being the most embarrassing and dismal failure in 28 years of international climate negotiations, the final text must include clear language on phasing out fossil fuels. Anything else is a massive step backwards from where the world needs to be to truly address the climate crisis and make sure the 1.5°C goal doesn’t die in Dubai.

A new UN report has confirmed that we are not on track to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
This latest report card shows that we are failing, not because we don't know the answers — but because we aren't doing our homework.
We need to rapidly phase out fossil fuels, dramatically accelerate climate finance, protect nature, and deploy renewable energy both rapidly and equitably.
Now is the moment when we must do all that we can to renew one of the key resources necessary for climate action: political will. theguardian.com/environment/…

I am profoundly saddened by the loss of Joe Lieberman. First and foremost, he was a man of devout faith and dedication to his family. My heart goes out to Hadassah, Hana, Matt, Rebecca, Ethan, his sisters, and all those grieving his loss. Joe was a man of deep integrity who dedicated his life to serving his country. He was a truly gifted leader, whose affable personality and strong will made him a force to be reckoned with. That’s why it came as no surprise to any of us who knew him when he’d start singing his favorite song: Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”. And doing things Joe’s way meant always putting his country and the values of equality and fairness first. His fierce dedication to these values was clear even as a young man. When he was about to travel to the South to join the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, he wrote: "I am going because there is much work to be done. I am an American. And this is one nation, or it is nothing.” Those are the words of a champion of civil rights and a true patriot, which is why I shared that quote when I announced Joe as my running mate. It was an honor to stand side-by-side with him on the campaign trail. I’ll remain forever grateful for his tireless efforts to build a better future for America.

For climate advocates across the country, the outcome of this election means that all of us must find ways to redouble our efforts and find bipartisan solutions to the climate crisis that create jobs, promote prosperity and safeguard the future of humanity. In a moment such as this, it is important to remember that all major reform efforts, from civil rights to the climate movement, suffer dark days. And this is surely one. We can mourn a loss, but we can’t linger in despair. Our planet doesn’t have time for that. Now more than ever, this movement needs engagement and leadership from all corners of the country. During a down moment in the struggle for civil rights, Martin Luther King, Jr. said something about overcoming days like this: “If you can’t fly, run; if you can’t run, walk; if you can’t walk, crawl; but by all means keep moving.” We know the line to solutions is never straight or easy. But we have won major victories in tackling the climate crisis and reducing climate pollution in our country, and we will again. My greatest source of hope comes from the courage and commitment of grassroots leaders and advocates in the U.S. and around the world who are relentlessly pushing for progress. Onward.

The chances for real progress at COP28 were badly damaged early this year when an oil company CEO was appointed to lead the negotiations. And now investigative journalists have confirmed some of the worst fears of those who criticized that absurd appointment with the shocking news that the President-designate has been using the meetings he has set up with nations around the world to sell more oil and gas. At the same time, the fossil fuel company he leads (the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) has been preparing to launch one of the largest expansions of oil and gas production of any company in the world — timed to begin immediately after COP28 concludes. Using international climate talks as leverage to shore up support for pumping more oil and gas at a time when we urgently need to phase out fossil fuels is — to say the least — utterly appalling.

In its first week, the new administration has taken many steps to roll back climate progress. One I want to draw extra attention to is the repeal of an environmental justice Executive Order I was proud to champion in the Clinton-Gore White House. The video below shows a day's worth of harmful particulate pollution flowing into a part of America known as "Cancer Alley." 66.9% of residents of Cancer Alley are Black. The poverty rate is nearly 50% higher in Cancer Alley than in the country as a whole. It is one of the most heavily polluted areas in the United States and the town of Reserve, Louisiana has the highest cancer risk in the U.S., at 50 times the national average. Decades of discriminatory practices have turned low-income communities and communities of color across the country into dumping grounds for pollution. Environmental justice isn't part of some imaginary "woke agenda." The Executive Order that was repealed last week focused on ending discrimination, not perpetuating it. This is a disappointing setback for those who seek to put an end to this longstanding injustice. But environmental justice advocates are among the most active and effective voices in the global grassroots movement for environmental protection and climate action. I look forward to continuing to lock arms with them in our struggle for a cleaner future.

The decision at #COP28 to finally recognize that the climate crisis is, at its heart, a fossil fuel crisis is an important milestone. But it is also the bare minimum we need and is long overdue. The influence of petrostates is still evident in the half measures and loopholes included in the final agreement. Fossil fuel interests went all out to control the outcome, but the passionate work of millions of climate activists around the world inspired and motivated delegates from many nations to loosen the industry’s grip. Whether this is a turning point that truly marks the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era depends on the actions that come next and the mobilization of finance required to achieve them. We must ask ourselves how much longer will the world have wait before all nations summon the political will to overcome these narrow special interests and act on behalf of the future of humanity. It is up to all of us to hold our leaders accountable to their promise to transition away from fossil fuels once and for all.

Congratulations to @lopezobrador_ for his election as Mexico’s next President. Earlier this year we met to discuss his commitment to the climate crisis. Mexico can and should play a leading role in driving clean energy solutions & increase its ambition under the #ParisAgreement.

What we should remember today and every day: We share Mother Earth as our only home. There is no Planet B. Happy #EarthDay everyone! Beautiful photo courtesy of @NASA’s #DSCOVR satellite.

.@TheDemocrats’ decision to sabotage a #ClimateDebate is extremely disappointing. Voters all over the U.S. are demanding we focus on the biggest threat to our nation and humanity’s future and prioritize solving the climate crisis instead of continuing business as usual.

In his speech today, the President erroneously pointed to natural gas as a clean energy solution. Fracking is a losing game – it produces a dangerous carbon fuel that’s worsening the climate crisis. 1/4

The awe-inspiring "Blue Marble" photo was taken 50 years ago today, yet each time I see it, it serves as a fresh reminder of our planet's beauty and fragility. This is humanity's only home, and we must do our best to protect it.

Tearing families apart and putting kids in an Archipelago of Cages is not the America that we know and love. We are at a fork in the road: one way is right; the other wrong. The President is long overdue in ending this cruel & inhumane policy.

Save trees! (plus a global transition to clean energy, of course).
We know you didn’t see all of "Trees" on air. Check out the full sketch here. #SNL

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Robert Redford. His generational talent as an actor and director entertained and enlightened audiences around the world for decades, and his passion for independent film and documentaries played a historically crucial role in transforming them into powerful tools for change. And most significantly, he used his skills and extraordinary popularity to focus public attention on the fate of humanity and our planet.  He inspired people around the world to take action to protect the environment and address the climate crisis. I feel lucky to have called him a friend. To Sibylle and his family, to his friends and his fans, may we hold his memory close and may we each do our part to continue his work.

Five years since Hurricane Sandy, and dangerous storms continue to batter our coasts, with bigger downpours, flooding, and lives forever affected. We can, and we must act with urgency to solve the climate crisis. #Sandy5

Fossil fuels are subsidized 38x more than renewables globally. Now the Canadian government wants to spend billions more of taxpayer dollars to increase its country’s contribution to the climate crisis. This is not in the public interest. We must keep fighting to #StopKM.

The fossil fuel industry has started to say the quiet part out loud a little more often: they want to continue pumping fossil fuels forever. And, of course, they are still pushing phony ‘solutions’ intended to delay real climate action. I explain in my latest from @TEDTalks. ted.com/talks/al_gore_what_t…

Today’s EPA announcement ignores the blindingly obvious reality of the climate crisis and sidelines the EPA’s own scientists and lawyers in favor of the interests and profits of the fossil fuel industry. Weakening safeguards that reduce greenhouse gas pollution will harm American competitiveness in a global economy that is moving away from oil, gas, and coal and will increase the suffering of communities that are overburdened by the dirty co-pollutants caused by burning fossil fuels.
